Game-A-Week Episode 7: Gigantic
This week is going to be a little different. I didn't actually get to play anything this week but since the week is almost over, we might as well do it anyway.
So Gigantic.
It's a moba with cel-shaded graphics that plays like an action game.
And I liked it
Unfortunately, it was shut down.
I wrote a post on the subreddit to pay my respects and I couldn't say it better a second time so here it is:
"Well, it's done. The game has officially been shut down. Clicking on the desktop shortcut will just bring you to Arc Games' collection of games you can download from their client and the Gigantic official website just redirects you to Arc Games' official website. It doesn't even tell you that you can't play it anymore, it acts like it never existed in the first place.
I only started playing a few months ago because I heard it was shutting down and I was always meaning to try it but never got around to it. The queue times were monstrous and after waiting 2-6 hours per game, I decided to put up with the low player base wasn't worth it.
But yesterday, it was pretty active. I was getting games every 10 minutes. Until yesterday I was only able to play once or twice and I didn't care much for it. But I was able to play enough yesterday to get the hang of the game and I was having fun! How awful it was, to only just start liking the game the day before it was shut down.
My favorite character to play as was Uncle Sven. Dude, he's so much fun. His Q launches you like 30 feet into the air and using his E right before you land is such a rush of excitement. Like a roller coaster or paratrooper. I'm so sad that I'll never be able to play as him again. Flying across the map was one of the most fun things I've ever done in a multiplayer game and I only ever got to play as him once. And have you ever just stared at his potions? The graphics on them are simply gorgeous. Especially the big blue one on his back. I have been guilty of just staring at it sloshing around for a good few minutes mid-game.
I also liked Ainsling (Or however you spell her name) but not as much as Sven. (The other summoner was fun too) I love her design so much with the sleeves that are too long for her. She looks like something out of a fairy tale.
You know what guys? I didn't like this game at first but I came to love it. It's a true diamond in the rough. It deserved better, it deserved to live and I wish I could have played it more than I had."
There IS a private server. Shortly, after I wrote that, I was offered a discord link to their secret clubhouse and a link to the proper build of the game that works with the server (Which, is only distributed secretly as they're under NDA so I felt special)
So that's why this game is getting a game-a-week instead of a "in memory of" paragraph like what Peria Chronicles got.
But things didn't go as planned.
I was kicked from every game I tried joining.
After the third attempt, I found out it wasn't a mistake and they actually were just removing me from every single game.
When I asked what was going on, the server owner told me and I quote "Shut the fuck up"
This was followed by basically the entire rest of the server saying some pretty awful things to me.
So I wrote a strongly worded farewell and left.
I was pretty much bullied out of the server almost instantly.
The next day I told the guy who gave me the link "Thanks but no thanks"
The server owner and one other member reached out to me to apologize and explain that there was this dude named "Corgi" who was griefing the server after being banned and they all thought I was him.
I said "I appreciate it but I'm not just going to forget how I was treated. I will not be returning."
And that was the end of that. I don't care if it was a misunderstanding. I really wish I could still play my boy Uncle Sven because he really was that fun but the fact of the matter is my first encounter with these people was downright awful and I don't want to play any games with them. Besides, me not returning would leave a much bigger impact than if I had come back after the apology. And I want them to feel as bad as they made me feel. It sucks but I think I made the right decision. Maybe once I cool down, I'll forgive and forget. THEN I'll come back to play my boy Uncle Sven but that's not anywhere in the near future.
I give Gigantic a RIP/10. Its a great game. I just wish I could play it. And that the people who inhabit the private server weren't mostly all genuinely horrible people.
