Game-A-Week Episode 20: Tera
10:14 PM
Before we start this week's Game-A-Week, something happened.
10:14 PM
And by something I mean IT.
10:14 PM
Yes, it finally happened.
10:14 PM
I ran out of space on my hard drive and this is the game that did us in.
10:15 PM
What this means is that we're now in the endgame. Things are going to be heating up here in Game-A-Week from here on out.
10:15 PM
Why?
10:16 PM
Because now, there's a finite amount of games I can hold on my computer.
10:17 PM
So from here on out, I'm going to be a lot more harsh. Only the absolute best of the best will have the honor of staying on my computer now.
10:18 PM
In order to continue Game-A-Week, I will uninstall as many games as I need and if I do, I won't look back. Even games that I have already put in the "Keeper" pile are not safe.
10:19 PM
There are only four games on my computer I consider as "essential" as of this moment. These are Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft Classic, Wakfu and Black Desert. Anything else is not immune to getting uninstalled if or when needed.
10:21 PM
This will also significantly cut down on PC Game Slayer which is fine because that just means I have more time for other things.
10:21 PM
Oh, wait, did I just mention PC Game Slayer? Uh, just forget about that, okay?
10:22 PM
But hey, if anything, this just means I've achieved my goal of using my computer to its full potential. The rest of Game-A-Week will just be a victory lap.
10:23 PM
And also, because my friends really like reading these and who am I to end that for them prematurely?
10:24 PM
And with that, let's get into this week's Game-A-Week. This is now: Game-A-Week: Rock Hard Mode!
10:27 PM
So this week I played Tera which is a free aim action MMORPG
10:27 PM
Oh, and before I forget, this game is the final game in the roleplaying arc. Yes, this is the thrilling conclusion.
10:28 PM
So this time the style of roleplay I chose was "Serious Catfishing" . Where I combined the first two styles of roleplay and decided to become an E-girl while not speaking out of character based on the game's lore.
10:29 PM
And fittingly enough as this was the finale of the roleplaying arc, this was by far, the most challenging.
10:30 PM
So for my race I chose Elin because the game describes them as and I quote: "Innocent waifs on the outside, eternal nature spirits on the inside"
10:30 PM
Which sounded EXACTLY what I wanted to accomplish.
10:31 PM
Now before I played this game, I saw Tera being referred to as "Elin Simulator" due to the favoritism the developers have towards this race.
10:31 PM
So I went in expecting some kind of super busty race of cat girl elves.
10:32 PM
Turns out, Elin are a race of lolis with animal ears and tails.
10:32 PM
Huh.
10:34 PM
But once I looked at their class selection, I soon realized why this game was called "Elin Simulator". Elin is the only race that can be every class. and they even have a couple Elin exclusive classes. Which, bee tee dubs, Elin is the only race to have exclusive classes.
10:34 PM
They also have the widest selection of options in character creation.
10:34 PM
Heck, even I fell under their charm since I ended up playing as one after all.
10:35 PM
Me, the guy who is into tall, muscular women chose the loli race.
10:36 PM
Elin is some powerful dark magic, let me tell you.
10:37 PM
Anyway, the class I chose was Ninja because it was the only one specifically described as "Elin only". So since I was going hard on the lore, I felt like that was the one I had to pick. Although, there were other classes that I felt better fit the description of a "nature spirit" but who was I to argue with the game itself?
10:39 PM
Although, one issue I did have with the Elin was that their tails and ears could only be one preset color. This made me feel like I could only choose one specific hair color otherwise it would look wack. If I went with my usual blue hair, it would look disgusting with my yellow ears and tail.
10:41 PM
But anyway, we were off into the world and this game had one of the most bizarre tutorial sequences I've ever experienced.
10:42 PM
The game has you move around, talk to NPCs and then.... fix a stuffed bear? And THEN you got your first battle.
10:42 PM
It was weird but not unwelcome. It got a chuckle out of me at least and showed me that the game had charm.
10:43 PM
Combat is really fun. At first skills seem unnecessary and clunky but as you gain more, you realize that you're not supposed to use them one by one.
10:44 PM
Each skill has another that it combos into.
10:44 PM
So once you land one skill, you'll get a prompt to press the spacebar in order to use the next skill in your current chain.
10:45 PM
Its actually really fluid and makes boss fights very fun.
10:46 PM
Also, instead of having attacks being single target, they have hitboxes and the hitbox doesn't go away until the animation is completely over.
10:48 PM
So if you swing your sword like a baseball bat for example, as you swing your sword backwards at the very end of the animation, any enemies behind you will get hit because even though its the "resting" part of the animation, the hitbox is still on your sword. Its a pretty cool system instead of just anything in front of you gets hit.
10:48 PM
Buuuuuut, that's pretty much all there is to this game.
10:50 PM
This is one of those game you play for the combat and only the combat. Questing is nothing special, dungeons are braindead easy (Heck, until we got to the boss, my party basically cleared out the entire dungeon before I could get close to any enemies to attack them) and that's pretty much all the content the game has.
10:50 PM
I liked this game but I only liked the part where I got to hit things.
10:51 PM
And only bosses felt like actual fights because they were the only ones that could actually survive a couple of hits from me (And even then, some bosses were total pushovers)
10:54 PM
There is open world PvP but you can't participate in that until you reach level 65. I chose a PvP server so I could have thrilling stories of life and death in-between questing as part of the roleplay but I obviously didn't get to do any of that.
10:54 PM
As for the roleplaying part, I wasn't as successful as I was in Kurtzpel.
10:55 PM
I encountered very few people on my journey and the ones I did, must have had the FBI glancing over their shoulder because they stayed the heck away from me.
10:56 PM
You know, I thought playing a loli would really attract people to me. After all, that's why the FBI meme is so popular. Because lolis are all the rage now. It might not be my cup of tea but I was certain it would attract the degenerates. I mean, almost everyone I encountered was playing an Elin too.
10:57 PM
On the final day, after getting no bites I sent my farewell echoing into the server chat.
10:58 PM
"Goodbye, my friends. May the wings of nature guide you to victory..... and also into my panties"
10:58 PM
That was the perfect note to end on. It was both in character AND lewd.
10:58 PM
First and only response? "Begone Elin"
10:59 PM
So that was Tera.
10:59 PM
I liked the game but since I have to be more strict about allowing games onto my computer, I decided to go another way and will not continue to be playing this. Oh, and I've decided roleplaying is super not for me. I am WAY too socially awkward for this stuff, it took way more effort than I thought it would.
11:00 PM
But then I found out there was an event going on where you could obtain a red or blue "Chupathingy" pet.
11:01 PM
Well, I didn't expect to see a Red vs Blue reference in 2020 so decided if I can get a Chupathingy, I'll stay and continue to play the game.
11:01 PM
So here's how the event works.
11:02 PM
Everyday when you log in, you get a Chupatoken which you can use to exchange for various rewards.
11:02 PM
At 200 Chupatokens, you can get a Chupathingy.
11:02 PM
The event ends on June 2nd so obviously, you can't get 200 tokens just by logging in.
11:03 PM
Chupatokens are also dropped by a select handful of dungeons.
11:03 PM
The lowest level dungeon on the list requires you to be level 65 and drops 1 Chupatoken per run.
11:04 PM
So I looked up how long it takes to get to level 65.
11:04 PM
On average, it takes 1 day and 15 hours to 2 days of in-game time in order to reach level 65.
11:05 PM
So I typed /played and found out that I played a total of 4 hours and 52 minutes this week.
11:06 PM
Rounding that up to 5 hours, unless I changed my daily routine and schedule, I would have only been able to play a little more than 15 hours by June 2nd.
11:06 PM
Not even close to enough time to reach level 65. and even THEN I'd have to run that dungeon almost 200 times on top of that in order to get enough tokens for a Chupathingy.
11:07 PM
I decided it wasn't in the cards and opted to leave Tera behind forever.
11:09 PM
I give Tera a 6/10. While I did like it and I did give it a passing grade, I will not continue to play it as I now have to be more picky and selective about which games stay on my computer and now that the bar has been raised, this game unfortunately does not make the cut.
11:09 PM
11:09 PM
11:09 PM
11:09 PM
11:10 PM
Here's Litara, my Elin Ninja. I quite like her and she's the main reason leaving Tera forever was a difficult decision. Those boots are quite stylish, after all.
