 Game-A-Week Episode 33: Tetris 99

11:46 PM
This is the fourth and final Game-A-Week mini.
11:47 PM
After this.... Well, I hope you're as excited for it as I am.
11:47 PM
So you know Tetris, right?
11:47 PM
But have you ever wanted to KILL someone in Tetris?
11:47 PM
Well now you can!
11:48 PM
Tetris 99 is a battle royale game where you and 99 other players, play the same game of Tetris. Last man standing wins.
11:48 PM
Its just basic Tetris except for one thing.
11:49 PM
Every time you clear a line, you send junk blocks to one of the other players. Clear enough lines faster than they can clear their own and you'll straight up MURDER them.
11:50 PM
And that's it. That's the game. Its Tetris but with a bloodthirsty twist.
11:51 PM
I give Tetris 99 a 99/10. There is no such thing as a perfect game but if there was, it would be Tetris. And now I can KILL people. How can I not love this game?
11:57 PM
Completely unrelated, but this is a true masterpiece. I love it so much. If there was any one thing that perfectly captures the essence of my favorite game, its this. It manages to squeeze in all the people we've met and adventures we've had with this series these last 24 years, it makes me feel very emotional. I want everyone to see it. My favorite detail is how, just like in Gen 1, it starts with four boys walking down a set of railroad tracks.

Game-A-Week Episode 32: Breath of Fire

2:24 AM
Ready for Game-A-Week mini volume 3?
2:25 AM
Breath of Fire is a role-playing video game series developed by Capcom. It originated on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993. The series is notable for its recurring characters and ambiguous continuity; though each game is its own self-contained story, the names of the two lead characters are usually Ryu and Nina. The story commonly involves an adventurer named Ryu (name usually changeable) who can shapeshift into different types of dragons.Over the course of his journey, he befriends Nina, a girl with wings. At its inception, Breath of Fire took place in a medieval fantasy style fictional world. Following the mainstream success of Japanese role-playing games in the 1990s, the series began using the original anime-style artwork for later Western releases of the games (rather than the Westernized art that was drawn specifically for the Western releases of the first two games), post-apocalyptic themes, and an increased emphasis on character development. Despite these changes, the core structure of Breath of Fire remains largely linear and plot-focused. As of 2016, six Breath of Fire titles have been released, with three games being ported to handheld game consoles as well as Nintendo's Virtual Console, and two ported to the Nintendo Switch's SNES games library. As of December 31, 2019, the series has sold 3.2 million units worldwide.
2:26 AM
I liked the game, I couldn't figure out what to do after the tutorial but the combat was fun.
2:26 AM
Just like Earthbound, I had a bit of a rocky start with it but I can easily see it growing on me and becoming one of my favorite games.
2:29 AM
The story is pretty cool too. This powerful wizard named Sara turns you to stone while your village is being attacked by a rival country in order to prevent you from fighting them and throwing your life away. You awaken along with the rest of the village after the attack in a destroyed village.
2:29 AM
I'm not gonna lie, protecting your village by turning everyone to stone until the invaders leave is pretty metal. And watching Sara fight the dark lord was pretty epic for an 8-bit cutscene. Capcom definitely knew what they were doing.
2:30 AM
And then... I couldn't figure out what to do after that. I went to the next town over but nothing happened. Oh well.
2:32 AM
I give Breath of Fire a 6/10. I know this is a game I'll probably love, I just need to figure out what to do. I played it and the sequel over Nintendo's online subscription service which lets you stream a load of SNES and NES games for free (Well, free as in its included with the subscription but its not the main reason you get the sub) so I'll definitely take another whack at both of them when I'm ready
2:33 AM
Also, Sara is pretty hot.
